Structured cabling

Structured cabling is a standards-based system of cables, connectors, panels and pathways that supports data, voice and other services across a building or campus, organized into defined subsystems rather than point to point runs.

Also known as: structured cabling system, SCS, premises cabling, network cabling

What is Structured cabling?

Structured cabling is cabling designed as a system. It uses standard components and a planned layout so the same infrastructure can support different equipment and services over time. Typical elements are work area outlets, horizontal cabling, telecommunications rooms, backbone cabling and equipment rooms.

The term is tied to published standards. ISO/IEC 11801 specifies generic cabling for premises, covering balanced copper and optical fiber, and in North America the ANSI/TIA 568 family and related TIA standards play a similar role. Local codes and the design standard chosen for a site shape the details.

Structured cabling is not the same as ad hoc cabling, where cables are run as needed for one device. It is also different from patching, which is the short connections between panels and equipment inside a room.

How it shows up in practice

  • Name the standard and the cable category or fiber type in the scope, for example Cat6A copper or OM4 fiber, so the design is clear.
  • Agree labeling, pathways, firestopping and testing before work starts, since these are expensive to fix later.
  • Ask for test results for every link and as-built drawings that show where each cable goes.
  • Check who supplies materials, who manages permits where they are required, and who is responsible for making good after work.
