Asset audit reports reconciled against your CMDB

Part of Data Center Maintenance. Last reviewed October 2026.

Quick answer

What is Data Center Asset Audit Reports Reconciled to Your CMDB?

A data center asset audit report reconciled against your CMDB is a physical inventory of racks, compared record by record with what your configuration database says exists. Deploris engineers scan or read serial numbers, asset tags and rack positions, then deliver a variance list that shows missing, unrecorded and misplaced assets.

WHAT THE WORK COVERS

What Data Center Asset Audit Reports Reconciled to Your CMDB includes.

  • 01Walk-through of each cabinet, reading device serial numbers, asset tags, model and U position
  • 02Capture of power supply count, connected PDU outlets and key port connections where scope includes them
  • 03Matching of observed devices to CMDB configuration items, using serial number as the primary key
  • 04Classification of variances: in CMDB but not found, found but not in CMDB, and location or attribute mismatch
  • 05Photographic evidence of each cabinet and of unlabelled or unidentifiable devices
  • 06Supply of results in CSV or spreadsheet format shaped to your CMDB import template

HOW WE DELIVER IT

How it is delivered.

  1. 1

    Agree fields and tolerances

We settle which attributes are audited, such as serial number, model, rack and U position, how unlabelled devices are handled, and what format your CMDB team wants the results in.

  2. 2

    Export and prepare the baseline

Using your CMDB export, we prepare cabinet-by-cabinet audit sheets so engineers can check each expected device against what is physically installed.

  3. 3

    Audit the floor

Engineers visit each cabinet, record what they see, photograph the evidence and tag anything with no identifiable serial number so it can be traced afterward.

  4. 4

    Reconcile and report

We match physical findings to the CMDB, group the variances, and deliver the report and import-ready data. Your team decides which side is corrected for each variance.

INPUTS AND OUTPUTS

What you provide and what you receive.

You provide

  • CMDB export for the audited rooms or cages, with serial numbers and locations
  • Floor plan or rack naming convention, and access for all cabinets in scope
  • Rules for handling third-party or customer equipment in shared cabinets
  • Contact in the CMDB team who can answer questions on field definitions

You receive

  • Audit report with totals by room and cabinet, and a full variance list
  • Import-ready file with verified serial numbers, models and positions
  • Photo evidence per cabinet and for unresolved items
  • List of unidentified devices with their positions for follow-up

WHEN IT FITS

When this is the right deliverable.

Scenario 01

Your CMDB has not been checked against the floor for years, and you suspect ghost assets are driving up maintenance and licensing costs.

Scenario 02

You are about to consolidate or migrate a facility and want the real inventory before planning moves.

Scenario 03

An internal audit or a colocation billing review has asked for proof of what equipment you actually have installed.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions.

What is a data center asset audit?
It is a physical check of every device in scope, recording serial number, model and rack position, then comparing results to your records. Deploris delivers a variance list showing what is missing, what is installed but unrecorded, and what sits in the wrong place.
How do you reconcile an audit against our CMDB?
We use the serial number as the primary matching key, then compare model, location and other agreed attributes against your exported configuration items. Each mismatch is classed as missing, unrecorded or mismatched. We do not change the CMDB ourselves unless you ask us to.
Can you audit equipment without asset tags?
Yes. If the device has a readable serial number on its chassis or in its management interface, we use that. Where there is neither, we photograph the device, record its position and model, and list it as unidentified so your team can decide the next step.
How long does a data center audit take?
It depends on the number of cabinets, device density, access rules and how clean the labelling is. Densely populated racks with hidden serial numbers take longer. After reviewing your export and floor plan, we give an estimate in the written scope before work begins.
