Application installation, patching, and configuration management

Part of Desktop Support (Remote and Onsite). Last reviewed October 2026.

Quick answer

What is Application Installation, Patching, and Configuration?

Application installation, patching, and configuration management is the controlled delivery of software to user devices: packaging or deploying approved installers, applying vendor updates in stages, and setting each application to your standards. Deploris engineers use your endpoint tools, record versions and outcomes per device, and handle failures, so devices stay current without disrupting users.

WHAT THE WORK COVERS

What Application Installation, Patching, and Configuration includes.

  • 01Installs using your tooling: Intune Win32 apps, Microsoft Configuration Manager, Jamf Pro, winget, or manual installers where policy allows
  • 02Silent install switches, MSI and MSIX handling, detection rules, and dependency checks for each application
  • 03Monthly OS patching and third-party updates for browsers, PDF readers, Java, and runtimes, staged by ring such as pilot then broad
  • 04Application configuration: license activation, default profiles, plug-ins, certificates, mapped drives, and printer assignments
  • 05Remediation of failed installs and pending reboots, including reruns, cleanup of partial installs, and manual patch application
  • 06Compliance checks against a baseline list so missing or outdated applications are found before an audit does
  • 07Rollback steps and known-good versions recorded for each change

HOW WE DELIVER IT

How it is delivered.

  1. 1

    Inventory and baseline

We pull software and patch status from your endpoint tool, compare it to your approved catalog and target versions, and list the gaps by device group.

  2. 2

    Test and schedule

New packages and patches go first to a pilot group. We agree maintenance windows and user notification with your IT lead before broad deployment.

  3. 3

    Deploy and remediate

Engineers monitor deployment status, re-run failures, clear pending reboots, and assist users on devices that fall out of policy or are offline.

  4. 4

    Verify and record

Final compliance is checked against the baseline, exceptions are documented with a reason, and the change record lists versions, rings, and rollback steps.

INPUTS AND OUTPUTS

What you provide and what you receive.

You provide

  • Access to your endpoint management platform with deployment rights, or an agreed approval path
  • Approved software catalog with licence keys or tenant licensing details
  • Patch policy: target versions, deferral limits, maintenance windows, and pilot group
  • Vendor installers, packaging standards, or a repository for source media

You receive

  • Applications installed and configured to your baseline on the in-scope devices
  • Patch compliance summary showing devices current, devices pending, and documented exceptions
  • Change records with versions, deployment rings, and rollback steps
  • Corrected failed installs and a list of devices needing a separate fix

WHEN IT FITS

When this is the right deliverable.

Scenario 01

A critical vendor patch has to reach several hundred laptops across branch offices that rarely connect to the corporate network.

Scenario 02

You are rolling out a new line-of-business application and want engineers to install, license, and configure it at each desk.

Scenario 03

Third-party software on user devices is several versions behind, and your internal team has no capacity to chase it.

WHERE WE DELIVER

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions.

What is application patching and why does it need field support?
Application patching is applying vendor updates to fix security flaws and bugs on installed software. Automated tools handle most devices, but some fail, stay offline, or hit pending reboots. Engineers remediate those exceptions, either remotely or at the desk, so compliance numbers reflect reality.
Which tools do engineers use to deploy software to desktops?
Whatever you already run, commonly Microsoft Intune, Microsoft Configuration Manager, Jamf Pro for macOS, or scripted installs with winget. We do not require a new platform. Engineers follow your packaging standards and approval process, and record the version and result per device in the ticket or change record.
Can you patch devices that are rarely on the corporate network?
Often yes, if they are cloud-managed through Intune or Jamf, since updates arrive over the internet. For devices that are unenrolled or repeatedly failing, an engineer can reach them remotely or on-site, apply the update manually, and bring them back into management.
How do you avoid patches breaking user applications?
By staging. Patches go to a pilot group first, results are checked, and then broader rings follow. Each change records the previous version and rollback steps. The pilot group should include users of business-critical applications, which we agree with your IT lead before deployment starts.
