Firewall Installation.

Physical installation and initial configuration of firewalls and UTM appliances, including rule-set implementation, VPN setup, and traffic validation.

Overview

What is Firewall Installation?

Firewall installation services cover the physical deployment and initial configuration of next-generation firewalls and UTM appliances. We rack-mount the device, connect interfaces, load your security policy rule set, configure VPN tunnels, enable threat prevention features, and validate that traffic flows correctly before handing over to your security operations team.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why Firewall Installation matters.

A firewall sits where a mistake is felt across the whole office at once. A typo in the policy, an interface cabled into the wrong zone, or a protection feature left switched off means the business either loses connectivity or runs believing it is protected when it is not. Buyers hire an on-site installer because the cutover often needs a person at the rack with a console cable and a calm head during a maintenance window. Without that, teams improvise, skip the failover test, and discover the gaps during a real incident.

A well-run installation ends with a device whose policy matches the approved rule set, with management access restricted to the networks you named. Logs flow to the collector you use, and test traffic proves that permitted flows pass and blocked flows do not. A rollback path stays ready until you are satisfied, and administrator access is handed over through your own process. The point is not only that the firewall is online, but that your security team can verify the result independently, using evidence the engineer left behind.

SCOPE

Scope of service.

  • 01Firewall appliance rack-mount and power connection
  • 02Interface configuration (WAN, LAN, DMZ, management)
  • 03Security policy and rule-set implementation
  • 04Site-to-site and remote access VPN configuration
  • 05Threat prevention feature activation (IPS, AV, URL filtering)
  • 06High-availability pair configuration and failover testing
  • 07Traffic flow validation and rule-set verification

CHOOSING

Choosing this service.

What to decide before you order, and what sits outside the scope.

Replacement or first-time install

Replacing a live firewall means migrating existing policy, planning a cutover and protecting running traffic. A first-time install has fewer dependencies but usually needs more decisions about zones and addressing. Tell us which you have, since the preparation and the risk differ considerably between the two.

Who owns the rule set

Decide whether your security team supplies a finished rule set for us to implement, or wants a second pair of eyes on a draft. Implementation of a finished policy is the cleanest scope. Policy review is possible but should be named separately so the effort is planned.

Plan the cutover window

List the applications, tunnels and partners that depend on the perimeter, and who can confirm each works afterward. A cutover is only complete when the people who own those services say so. Choose a window that leaves time for rollback if a check fails.

Standalone, paired or centrally managed

A single unit, a high-availability pair and a unit registered to a central management platform each involve different steps and tests. Have licenses activated, administrator accounts agreed and the logging destination ready, so the visit is spent on configuration rather than waiting for access.

Not included

  • Writing the security policy and deciding which traffic should be permitted stays with your security team.
  • Penetration testing, vulnerability scanning and compliance attestation need a specialist security firm and are not part of an installation.
  • Alert monitoring, log review and incident response after handover sit outside the scope of the install visit.
  • Purchasing or activating licenses, subscriptions and support entitlements is handled by you or your reseller.

USE CASES

Typical scenarios.

Scenario 01

A corporate headquarters replacing aging Cisco ASA firewalls with Palo Alto PA-5200 series in an active/passive HA pair.

Scenario 02

A branch network deploying FortiGate firewalls to 50 locations with centralized management via FortiManager.

Scenario 03

A data center installing a perimeter firewall pair with IPS and SSL decryption to meet updated compliance requirements.

PROCESS

How the work runs.

  1. 1

    Confirm policy and access

Before travel, the engineer reviews the approved rule set, interface plan and change ticket, and confirms console access, management addressing and the contact who can approve the cutover.

  2. 2

    Stage and rehearse

Where possible the device is configured and bench tested ahead of time, so the on-site window is spent on installation and verification rather than first-time configuration. Firmware level and license state are checked at this stage.

  3. 3

    Cut over in the window

The device is installed and the old unit stays available for fallback. Interfaces are connected to the right zones, and traffic is moved across in the order your plan sets. The previous device stays available until checks pass.

  4. 4

    Test flows and hand over

The engineer sends test traffic for permitted and blocked paths, checks tunnels and failover, confirms logging, and records the final configuration, photos and any open items for your security team.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Which firewall vendors do you support?
We deploy and configure firewalls from Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet (FortiGate), Cisco (Firepower, ASA), Check Point, Sophos, and WatchGuard.
Can you configure high-availability firewall pairs?
Yes. We deploy active/passive and active/active HA pairs with full failover testing to ensure no single point of failure at the perimeter.
Do you write the firewall rules?
We implement rule sets designed by your security team. If needed, we can also review and recommend firewall policy based on best practices and your network architecture.
How do you minimize downtime during a firewall replacement?
We pre-configure the new firewall in a staging environment, schedule the cutover during a maintenance window, and have a documented rollback plan in case of issues.
Does the engineer need remote access to our systems?
Usually the work is done from the console and local network, while your own team watches from their side. If remote access is needed, it should be a temporary account issued through your process and removed afterward. We do not need standing access to carry out an install.
How is the old firewall configuration migrated?
Your security team normally supplies the converted or rewritten policy, which the engineer applies and tests. Direct conversion tools can help, but their output still needs careful review. Decide in advance who checks the translated rules and signs them off, because differences between platforms can quietly change behavior.
How are administrator credentials handled?
Credentials should be issued through your own process, limited to the visit, and rotated by your team after handover. The engineer should not need to keep them, and should not write them into any report or note. If a default password must be set during staging, it is changed to a value you control before the device is used.
