Firmware and patch management for infrastructure devices

Part of Infrastructure Support. Last reviewed October 2026.

Quick answer

What is Firmware and Patch Management for Infrastructure Devices?

Infrastructure firmware and patch management is the controlled process of tracking, testing and applying updates to servers, switches, storage arrays and power devices. Deploris audits your current versions, plans updates against vendor advisories and compatibility matrices, applies them in agreed windows with rollback plans, and returns a before-and-after record.

WHAT THE WORK COVERS

What Firmware and Patch Management for Infrastructure Devices includes.

  • 01A version baseline covering BIOS, BMC, RAID and HBA firmware, NIC firmware, drive firmware, switch operating systems, storage microcode and UPS network card firmware
  • 02Advisory review against vendor security bulletins and CVE references relevant to your models
  • 03Compatibility checks using vendor release matrices, such as server support packs or recommended switch releases, before any update is approved
  • 04Pre-change backups: running configurations, array configuration exports and BMC settings
  • 05Staged rollout starting with a non-critical or lab unit, then production in agreed batches
  • 06Rollback plans per device class, including the fallback image or previous firmware package to be kept ready
  • 07Post-update validation: boot, link state, redundancy, array health and monitoring status

HOW WE DELIVER IT

How it is delivered.

  1. 1

    Baseline current versions

We collect firmware and software versions from management interfaces and device inventories, compare them with the vendor's current and end-of-support releases, and flag devices that are far behind or unsupported.

  2. 2

    Plan and risk-rate each update

For each target release we check release notes, known issues and compatibility with neighboring components. Updates are grouped into batches and each batch is risk-rated and tied to a change record.

  3. 3

    Apply in the agreed window

The engineer takes backups, applies the update following the vendor procedure, and watches for redundancy loss. If validation fails, the rollback plan is invoked instead of troubleshooting in the window.

  4. 4

    Validate and document

Each device is re-checked after the update. You receive a record of before and after versions, test results and any deviations, plus a recommended schedule for the next cycle.

INPUTS AND OUTPUTS

What you provide and what you receive.

You provide

  • Read or management access to devices, or an engineer escort where credentials cannot be shared
  • Maintenance windows and change freeze dates
  • Vendor support entitlements needed to download firmware and open cases
  • Your internal patching policy, including any approved version list

You receive

  • A firmware and patch baseline for every in-scope device
  • A prioritized update plan with risk rating and rollback approach
  • Before and after version records per device
  • Post-update validation results
  • A list of unsupported or end-of-life devices that need replacement planning

WHEN IT FITS

When this is the right deliverable.

Scenario 01

Your switches and storage controllers have run the same firmware since installation because nobody wants to risk an outage during an update.

Scenario 02

A vendor has published a security bulletin for the models you run and you need a controlled plan with evidence that affected devices were updated.

Scenario 03

You are preparing for an audit and need to show which infrastructure devices are on supported, current firmware.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions.

How often should server and network firmware be updated?
There is no single interval. Most teams review vendor releases quarterly, apply security fixes sooner when a bulletin affects their models, and avoid updating stable devices without a reason. The right cadence depends on vendor guidance, risk tolerance and maintenance windows, and we set it in your scope.
What is the risk of updating firmware on production infrastructure?
The main risks are failed updates, behavior changes and loss of redundancy during the update. We reduce them with compatibility checks, configuration backups, staged rollout, rollback plans and validation after each device. Critical devices are updated one side of a redundant pair at a time.
Does firmware management include operating system patching?
Firmware covers device-level software such as BIOS, BMC, switch operating systems and storage microcode. Server operating system patching is part of our server support work and follows your approved windows. Hypervisor and application patching stay with your platform teams unless added to the scope.
Can you update firmware at remote sites with no IT staff?
Yes. A local engineer can attend the site, take the backup, apply the update and verify service while your team follows remotely. We coordinate with your change process so nothing is applied outside an approved window, and the closeout report records versions and test results.
