WiFi Surveys (Ekahau)

Validation Surveys.

Post-installation verification that your deployed WiFi network meets coverage, capacity, and performance design targets.

Overview

What is Validation Surveys?

Validation surveys verify that an installed wireless network meets its design specifications and performance targets. After APs are permanently mounted and configured, our engineers walk the facility with Ekahau Sidekick to measure signal strength, SNR, throughput, roaming behavior, and channel utilization. The results confirm coverage or identify areas needing adjustment.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why Validation Surveys matters.

A network can pass an installer's checklist and still disappoint on the first busy day. Installers confirm that access points power on and join the controller, which is not the same as proving that a handheld scanner keeps its session while walking an aisle or that a conference room holds up with a full table. Without a validation survey, the first real test is your staff and guests, and their feedback arrives as vague complaints that are hard to trace. Disputes between the owner, the designer and the installer also tend to drag on when nobody holds measurements taken against agreed criteria.

A useful validation result compares what was built with what was specified, location by location, and states clearly which targets were met and which were not met. Where a target is missed, the report should say why: placement, power level, channel plan, mounting, an unrecorded obstruction or a configuration setting. That specificity lets the right party fix the right thing. It also leaves you with a dated baseline of the network at handover, which is useful for comparison when the layout changes or when new complaints begin.

SCOPE

Scope of service.

  • 01Post-installation walk-through with Ekahau Sidekick
  • 02Signal strength, SNR, and throughput measurement
  • 03Roaming analysis and handoff behavior verification
  • 04Channel utilization and co-channel interference assessment
  • 05Comparison of measured results against design targets
  • 06Remediation recommendations for any coverage gaps or weak zones

CHOOSING

Choosing this service.

What to decide before you order, and what sits outside the scope.

Agree acceptance criteria first

Validation is only meaningful against written targets, such as minimum signal level, minimum speed in named areas, and roaming behavior along defined routes. If the design did not record these, agree them with the designer and installer before the survey starts.

Pick the right moment

Survey after the access points are final and configured, and ideally after furniture and equipment are in place. Testing an empty building can look better than reality. If the site will be occupied soon, schedule a short revisit once people arrive and settle in.

Choose representative client devices

Phones, laptops, scanners and medical or industrial devices differ in antenna quality and roaming behavior from one model to the next. List the devices your operation depends on and make them available. The results are more useful when they reflect the clients people actually carry.

Decide who fixes findings

Agree beforehand whether the installer, your internal team or Deploris will act on the findings. Contracts sometimes make the installer responsible for meeting the design, so the report may need to be shared with them. Settling this early avoids delay and finger-pointing when issues appear.

Not included

  • Fixing findings, such as moving access points or editing controller settings, is quoted separately from the survey.
  • The report is evidence, not a certification, and does not by itself make the network compliant with any standard.
  • Wired network testing, including switch, cable and internet link performance, falls outside this wireless validation service.
  • Application troubleshooting on servers or cloud services is not covered, only the wireless path between the client and the network.

USE CASES

Typical scenarios.

Scenario 01

A new corporate office verifying that the freshly installed Aruba wireless network provides seamless coverage across all floors and meeting rooms.

Scenario 02

A logistics company confirming that warehouse WiFi supports real-time barcode scanning at every rack location.

Scenario 03

A hotel validating guest WiFi coverage in every room, corridor, and public area before opening night.

PROCESS

How the work runs.

  1. 1

    Confirm the baseline

The engineer reviews the design, the acceptance criteria and the as-installed access point list, then checks that mounting positions and radio settings match what was planned before any measurements begin.

  2. 2

    Prepare test conditions

Together with your contact, the engineer agrees walking routes, areas to prioritize and the client devices to use. Any known construction or furniture still pending is noted, so later differences can be explained.

  3. 3

    Walk and test

The engineer walks the agreed routes with the Sidekick and test clients, recording coverage, signal quality, interference, roaming transitions and throughput samples in the areas your operations depend on.

  4. 4

    Compare and report

Measured results are set against the design and the acceptance criteria. Each area is marked as met or not met, with a stated likely cause and a recommended fix for anything that falls short.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

When should a validation survey be performed?
Ideally within one to two weeks after installation, once all APs are mounted, powered, and configured. Furniture and occupants should be in place for accurate results.
What if the validation survey finds problems?
We document all issues with specific remediation steps, such as AP relocation, power adjustment, or channel changes. We can execute the remediation and re-validate as a follow-on engagement.
Is a validation survey required for compliance?
Some industries and standards (healthcare, PCI DSS, certain government frameworks) require documented evidence that wireless coverage meets specified criteria.
Do you test with different client device types?
Yes. We test with representative client devices (laptops, phones, tablets, handheld scanners) to account for variations in antenna sensitivity and radio performance.
Can you validate a network that someone else designed?
Yes. The engineer needs the design file, or at least the stated requirements and the access point plan, to work from. If the original design is not available, the survey can still measure against targets you define, though it cannot confirm that the build matches the design.
Will the survey disrupt people working?
Usually very little. The engineer walks the site with a laptop and a small measurement device, so people can keep working around them. Some throughput tests briefly generate traffic on the network, so it is sensible to tell your IT team and avoid periods of critical use.
What if the design targets were not written down?
Then the first step is to agree reasonable targets with your stakeholders, based on how each space is used. The engineer can help draft them, but you should approve them, since they define what counts as a pass or a fail in the final report.
