As-built network documentation and updated topology diagrams

Part of Network & Security Support. Last reviewed October 2026.

Quick answer

What is As-Built Network Documentation and Topology Diagrams?

As-built network documentation is the record of what was actually installed and configured, as opposed to what was planned. Deploris engineers capture device locations, port connections, addressing, and configurations during the work, then deliver updated topology diagrams and tables your operations team can use immediately for support and audits.

WHAT THE WORK COVERS

What As-Built Network Documentation and Topology Diagrams includes.

  • 01Physical topology diagrams showing devices, uplinks, link speeds, media types, and the room, rack, and rack unit location of each device
  • 02Logical diagrams for layer 2 and layer 3, including VLANs, trunks, routing domains, VPN tunnels, and WAN circuits
  • 03Port maps and patch schedules that tie switch ports to patch panel ports, wall outlets, and connected devices
  • 04IP address and VLAN tables with subnets, gateways, DHCP scopes, and management addresses as built
  • 05Rack elevation drawings and dated photos of racks, cable management, and labeling
  • 06Configuration backups and a record of device model, serial number, firmware version, and license state
  • 07A deviations list comparing the as-built state to the design, and optional updates to your CMDB or IPAM when you give us access

HOW WE DELIVER IT

How it is delivered.

  1. 1

    Collect your baseline

We ask for the existing diagrams, address plan, and naming standard, and agree the formats and tools you want the final documents delivered in.

  2. 2

    Capture during the work

Engineers record port connections, labels, serials, and photos as devices are installed, rather than reconstructing them from memory after the visit.

  3. 3

    Reconcile with configuration

Captured data is checked against exported device configurations, LLDP or CDP neighbor tables, and ARP or MAC data to confirm the diagrams match the running network.

  4. 4

    Deliver and file

You receive the updated diagrams and tables in your chosen formats, with a deviations list, and we load them into your documentation system where access allows.

INPUTS AND OUTPUTS

What you provide and what you receive.

You provide

  • Existing network diagrams, IP plan, and naming and labeling conventions
  • Preferred file formats, such as Visio, draw.io, PDF, or spreadsheets
  • Read access to device configurations or permission for our engineers to export them
  • Access details for your CMDB, IPAM, or documentation repository if you want records loaded directly

You receive

  • Updated physical and logical topology diagrams in the agreed formats
  • Port maps, patch schedules, and IP and VLAN tables for the equipment in scope
  • Rack elevations and dated photos of the installed equipment and labeling
  • Configuration backups and an asset list with serial numbers and firmware versions
  • A deviations list showing where the build differs from the approved design

WHEN IT FITS

When this is the right deliverable.

Scenario 01

Your network diagrams date from several refreshes ago, and the team that built the original network has moved on.

Scenario 02

You need handover documentation your operations or managed services team can accept before they take over support of a new site or campus.

Scenario 03

An audit or insurance review asks for current network records, and you want evidence of port-level connections and device inventory that supports your compliance evidence.

WHERE WE DELIVER

Delivered in 75+ metros across 11 countries.

Local, vetted engineers deliver this work on site across the United States and Western Europe, coordinated by one engagement manager.

QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions.

What is as-built network documentation and how does it differ from a design?
As-built documentation records what was physically installed and configured, including any changes made during the work. A design document records the intent. The gap between them is where outages and audit findings come from, which is why we list deviations explicitly.
Which formats do you deliver network topology diagrams in?
We deliver in the formats you specify, commonly Visio, draw.io, PDF, and spreadsheets for tables. If your team has a diagram template or icon set, we follow it so the new drawings match your existing documentation library.
Can you document an existing network that has no current diagrams?
Yes, as a discovery engagement. Engineers walk the closets, trace patching, read neighbor tables and configurations, and build the diagrams from verified data. The scope states which sites and layers are covered, so you know what the documentation does and does not include.
Do you update our CMDB or IPAM with the as-built information?
We can, if you give us access and a data standard to follow. Otherwise we deliver the data in structured spreadsheets that your team can import. Either way, the documents are tied to the dated photos and configuration backups taken on site.
